Stephanie Mikles worked as a behavioral specialist for Harford County Schools and the Child Advocacy Center of Harford County began investigating her last year.
The investigation yielded evidence that would lead to the shocking indictment, ABC2News reported.
Police said according to evidence, the incident happened in August of 2008 but in Maryland, there is no statute of limitations for bestiality and sources tell ABC2, the pet still lives with the family at their Jarrettsville home.
Mikles is currently on administrative leave without pay from the Harford County Schools System.
Investigators said the findings of bestiality were a surprise and that it was a separate investigation by the Child Advocacy Center that led them to this shocking discovery.
Mikles could not be reached for comment at her home, but her attorney said she is fighting the charge and has filed motions to dismiss the case.
Mikles was released on a $5,000 bond.
If convicted, the bestiality charge is a misdemeanor punishable with up to 10 years in prison and a $1,000 fine.
