CHARLOTTE, N.C. Jan 6 2013
Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Sexual Assault Unit have charged Kristina Ngum, 43, with one count of sexual activity with a student by a teacher.
Ngum is a teacher at Myers Park High School. She's also the varsity cheerleading coach there, according to the school's website.
The investigation began Friday after the victim was arrested on an unrelated drug charge. Investigators said the sexual activity happened off campus.
Ngum turned herself in at the Mecklenburg County Sherriff's Office on Saturday after investigators obtained a warrant. Her neighbors are just finding out about the charge.
"Unfortunately, it happens more and more often," Brent Jackson said. "I keep hearing that over and over again. I don't know what's causing it or what's happening in our community, but something's got to change."
Jackson, who lives in Ngum's Mint Hill neighborhood, does not know the teacher. He was surprised to see cop cars in the neighborhood Saturday.
Ngum was arrested in July 2011 for larceny under $50 and false pretense. Her Facebook page indicates she's a wife and a mother. It also states she's been teaching at CMS for more than a year.
CMS would not say anything about the accusations Saturday. A spokeswoman told Eyewitness News that they can't comment because it's an active police investigation.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Detective Owens is the lead detective assigned to this case. Please reference CMPD report number 2013-0104-1956-02.
