SEALE, Alabama May 1 2013 — Sheriff's officials are searching for the gunman who killed a Fort Benning soldier and left his body in a ditch early Monday morning.
Sgt. Donald LaShon Wilson, 34, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds and his body is being taken to Montgomery for an autopsy, said Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor. Wilson's body was found in Seale, Alabama — about 20 miles west of Fort Benning. Police in Phenix City found Wilson's Mercury Marquis on fire in the parking lot of an apartment complex.
Fort Benning officials have told investigators that Wilson was slated to be promoted to sergeant first class.
Police have not identified any suspects, and are unsure of the circumstances surrounding Wilson's death. Investigators said Wilson and one of his acquaintances had talked around 11 p.m. Sunday, and estimate that he was shot sometime between 11:30 p.m. Sunday and 3:30 a.m. Monday.
"At this time, we're looking into everything that we can," Taylor said during a press conference Monday. "We're looking into all of his associates and friends and family to give us some sort of indication as to what happened last night."
