Miami Fla May 1 2013 A police sergeant from Hialeah, Florida has been arrested on cocaine possession charges as well as possess drug paraphernalia.
Tomas Muñoz, 41, was taken into custody over the weekend following an investigations by the force's Internal Affairs group, reports the Miami Herald.
Muñoz's drug possession and abuse was discovered after an internal investigation into repeated unexcused absences in recent month. He was taken into custody in Miami on Saturday and remains in jail this week prior to a bond hearing.
"The arrest this morning is the culmination of an investigation that began several weeks ago," department spokesperson Carl Zogby told the Miami Herald.
Muñoz had been a member of the Hialeah Police Department since 1998 and, according to the Herald, was most recently heading up a street patrol in the high-crime area of Sector 1, in southeast Hialeah.
