HENDRICKS COUNTY, IN Jan 1 2013 - Technology, especially text messaging, is a part of how people communicate now more than ever.
As more people use text messaging, the federal government thinks texting should be used as another way to call for emergency services.
But texts to 911 are still the future. You cannot text the emergency service now.
Executive Director of Indiana's Hendricks County Communications Center Steven Cook says its "inevitable we are going to see texting."
The FCC wants emergency planners and phone companies to be ready for it by 2014. No experts thought it could happen that quickly, but it is coming.
Texting for emergency services does have its advantages. Texts go faster than phone calls and are less likely to clog up emergency phone lines.
Disadvantages to texting could lead to properly locating those in need and cost live-saving instructions, such as CPR.
