After he was shot with a pellet gun, a private security guard monitoring an upscale San Francisco neighborhood on Monday night reportedly unleashed a real gun on a car containing two suspected auto burglars.
No one was seriously injured in the wild shootout involving the 29-year-old guard, who told police he returned fire believing he might have been been shot by a bullet from a small-caliber gun, Officer Gordon Shyy said.
The guard, who has not been identified, had been working security for at least one building in the 800 block of Francisco Street, a steep, narrow and curving roadway between Leavenworth and Hyde streets.
At about 10:40 p.m., Shyy said, he reportedly encountered two 19-year-old men breaking into vehicles in the area and began following them. The thieves got into a silver Ford Mustang and began driving away, police said, but as they departed the guard felt a sting on his back.
Believing he'd been shot, the guard reportedly pulled out his firearm and shot at the suspects' vehicle, striking the rear window, shattering it, and also the passenger-side door, Shyy said. The suspects were not hit.
Officers reportedly arrived at the scene at the same time as the suspects were driving away. The suspects ran a few red lights and made some sharp turns, losing the officers, but they were spotted by other units and pulled over in the area of Kearny and Lombard streets, Shyy said.
Christopher Castillo, 19, of Daly City, and Marshawn Gomez, 19, of Oakland, were arrested and booked on charges that include burglary and assault with a deadly weapon.
