Louisville KY April 6 2013 A former assistant soccer coach for Ballard High School’s boy’s team is facing a child molestation charge in Clark County, Indiana.
Gary Tanner pleaded not guilty on Thursday in a case accusing him of abusing his daughter’s friend when she was 13.
Clark County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jeremy Mull said the child, now 15, told a school counselor at Our Lady of Providence High School who then reported it to the Indiana Department of Child Services in November.
The abuse allegedly took place several times over two months in 2010 and 2011 in Tanner’s home and once in Kentucky, according to court records. If convicted, Tanner could be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison.
Ben Jackey, a spokesman for Jefferson County Public Schools, said Tanner has been with the Ballard team since 2010 and coached last year, but would not be allowed to resume coaching while the case is pending. Tanner’s position is one that is filled on a year-to-year basis.
A bond has been set at $10,000 and Tanner’s next court date is scheduled for June. A trial date has been set for Sept. 25.
Mull said it is unclear if Tanner will also be charged for the alleged Kentucky incident.
