Orlando Fla March 21 2013 A 57-year-old Jones High School teacher was arrested Tuesday after Orlando police said he had sex with a 16-year-old female student.
Detectives say Hugh Broomes, named Jones High's teacher of the year last year, had sex with the girl 10 times since November. At least some of the encounters happened on the campus at 810 S. Rio Grande Ave., said Sgt. Jim Young, a police spokesman.
Broomes, a language-arts teacher and soccer coach, was arrested about 5:30 p.m. and was booked into the Orange County Jail on a charge of sexual activity with a child. He is being held without bail.
He was removed from the classroom Monday and will not work in the district pending the results of an internal investigation, said Kathy Marsh, a district spokeswoman. Broomes will be paid in the interim, she said.
Broomes started at Jones High in August 2005 and worked through June 2008. He returned to the district in January 2009.
